The Phantom brand is now a sub-brand of TECNO Mobile, and it is targeted at the premium smartphone market. The first premium smartphone launched under the brand is the Phantom X, an interesting creature that has people on all sides talking.
The Phantom X hit the market with a 6.7″ AMOLED, 90Hz display with Gorilla Glass 5 and curved edges. The build is metal and glass. The back of the device has a premium glass coating. Under the hood is a MediaTek Helio G95 chipset, 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB built-in storage, and a 4,700mAh battery with 33W fast charging.
This package will set you back by ₦224,000 (recommended retail price). It is the first time we are seeing a TECNO smartphone in that price range. It can be argued that this is not a TECNO device, though; this is a Phantom, the first of its kind. We got our hands on one for review and have photos of the unboxing process to share.
Phantom X Unboxing
In the box are the usual suspects – the phone itself, a faux leather case, a 33W charging brick, a USB cable, a 3.5 mm audio earphones, and a warranty card. Everything you want is in the box.
The Phantom X oozes class and premium quality all the way – right from the time we opened the box and picked it up in our hands. It is a stunning device. You could slap a logo from any other top smartphone brand on it, and you wouldn’t feel that anything was off. Because, nothing is. The design and manufacturing teams went all the way with the Phantom X.
The back of the phone is glass, but it has a vertically stripped texture that is really cool and makes for a less slippery holding. Big phones can be a handful; having a textured back increases grip and will reduce the chances of your phone dropping. But just to be sure, the back panel has Gorilla Glass 5 protection too.
If you’d like to keep your X even better protected, the bluish-grey faux leather case is solid quality and well designed to highlight the lines of the phone while shielding it from knocks and falls.
Looking at the phone, a big 6.7-inch display with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels stares back at you. In addition, it has curved edges, has Gorilla Glass 5 protection, and offers 90Hz refresh rate for a more fluid, smoother viewing. And this time, unlike what obtains with the Camon 17 Pro, the display is AMOLED.
Internal storage is a whopping 256 GB. There is a microSD card slot too, should you need more space (we wonder why you ever would, though). Keeping the lights on is a 4,700mAh battery with 33W fast charging.

Phantom X First Impressions
We have taken the Phantom X for a brief spin and have our first impressions of the performance. The MediaTek Helio G95 chipset and 8 GB RAM combination are a good match. Helio G95 is not a flagship processor, but using the phone has been a smooth experience for us. There have been no stutters or lags. Not that we were expecting any. As far as performance is concerned, we have not felt like we were missing anything.
The 50 MP camera sensor used in the rear camera is the same seen in premium flagships like the Vivo X50 and X60 series, and it is rumoured to be coming to Google’s Pixel 6 and 6 Pro devices as well [1]. Again, the choice of camera sensor says that TECNO really wanted to make a statement with the camera.
Coupled with the main 50 MP sensor is a 13 MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom, and an 8 MP ultra-wide lens. A quad-LED flash is close by for night shots. At the top of the 6.7″ AMOLED display is a dual selfie camera, featuring a 48 MP main shooter and an 8 MP secondary shooter, along with LED flash.
In wrapping up our Phantom X unboxing and first impressions, we must say that the phone has us impressed and drooling. We didn’t expect to be blown away the way we are.
