This article was first published in December 2021. That’s about two years ago. We have kept it updated at intervals, and now have updated it with up-to-date information for those looking for the cheapest 5G phones in Nigeria in 2024.

Given the recent advancements in the country concerning 5G as covered in this article, we decided to make a list of the cheapest 5G phones in Nigeria. All the devices in the list below are budget devices with the latest technology and do not require one breaking the bank in order to afford any of them.

You may ask, “What is 5G all about?” It is the new and fifth generation of the cellular network. Shockingly, there are still a lot of misconceptions about what 5G is and how it affects users. One major benefit of 5G that the telecommunication world is interested in is latency, when related to telecommunication networks this is simply the time taken for data to get from its originating point to its target point.

5G phones in Nigeria
Which are the cheapest 5G phones in Nigeria?

With every generation of cellular network, this “time” (latency) is reduced, hence making the network faster. This explanation is the reason 2G networks are slower than 3G, which is, in turn, slower than 4G. So, with the new 5G enabled devices browsing speeds are greatly increased, downloading time reduced and so much more. To put this into figures for better understanding, the highest speed or latency achieved by any 4G network clocks at 50MBps (on the 4G LTE-A) while one of the lowest speeds attained by 5G is 50MBps. You can say that 4G’s highest speeds are just the starting point for 5G devices.

If you want high download and upload speeds on your mobile device, you should consider getting a 5G device now that the deployment of the technology in Nigeria is around the corner. Because new technology appears on the most expensive devices first, many of those looking to enjoy an early taste of 5G will be on the lookout for the most affordable models – the cheapest 5G phones in Nigeria. Which is why we are here – to help you identify them.

The Spark 10 5G packs solid specs and features. The Dimensity 6020 5G chipset is decent, and here in Nigeria, the available variant is the one with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of built-in storage. We wonder why the lower variants are not on sale, as those would be even more affordable than this one. Keeping the lights on is a massive 5000 mAh battery, coupled with 18W fast charging.

Itel P55 5G, the cheapest 5G phone in Nigeria

The itel P55 5G was launched in Nigeria with a price tag of ₦138,200 for the 6GB RAM + 128GB storage variant. This makes it the cheapest 5G smartphone in Nigeria.

Note that all the prices quoted above will change from time to time, because of foreign exchange rate flictuations.

Before the arrival of the P55 5G, I did a video of the cheapest 5G phones in Nigeria. If interested, see it here.

5G phones in Nigeria below ₦100,000 (2021)

As you must have observed by now, all of the smartphones on the list of cheapest 5G phones in Nigeria cost below ₦200,000 and above ₦100,000. Are there any 5G phones in Nigeria below ₦100,000? Unfortunately, that is a tough price to find. Back in 2021, there were several articles floating around the Web, listing Infinix Zero 5G, Redmi Note 10 5G, Poco M3 Pro, and Realme 8 5G as selling for below ₦100,000. Nothing could be further from the truth. Those 5G phones all cost above ₦100,000, sometimes, above ₦150,000. We guess someone published the original article and others simply reproduced without fact-checking.

We found one listing of Redmi Note 10 5G on Jiji for N99,000. Every other brand new listing of the same model goes for 125,000 and above, so if you do take a look, have a hard look at the product before buying it. It may be used or refurbished and not brand new. As at August 2022, there are no 5G phones in Nigeria below 100k yet. We are hopeful that we will see 5G smartphones in that price range soon, though.

5G phones in Nigeria below ₦100,000 in 2024

With the way the cost of phones rose in 2023 and into 2024, thanks to the currency exchange rate, it is a useless endeavour searching for 5G phones under ₦100,000 now. There are none in the mainstream market. Perhaps it is possible to find one from a no-name Chinese manufacturer, but we wouldn’t even advice you to touch that with a 10-foot pole.

What is the cheapest 5G phone in Nigeria?

December 2023 Update: itel P55 5G arrived in December with a price of tag of ₦138,200, taking the spot of the cheapest 5G phone in Nigeria.

As at November 2023, the cheapest 5G phone in Nigeria was TECNO Spark 10 5G (8GB RAM + 256GB storage), and it sells for ₦143,000. If you are not down for it, especially because of the 720p display, feel free to pick one of the other alternatives that we listed.

In summary, between TECNO, Infinix, Samsung, and Nokia, you have a collection of the very cheapest 5G phones on sale in Nigeria to choose from. Before you spend on a 5G phone, though, you should check if your area has 5G coverage.
