Introducing Olla Phones, a new budget smartphone brand from Opera

Since the acquisition by the Chinese, Opera has been spreading out its wings in all directions, attempting to get a piece of every pie in the tech sector. Olla Phones is the company’s first foray into the highly competitive smartphone market and we can expect to see the first Olla phones in the market soon.

Norwegian Opera Software started out in 1995 as a browser company and has seen different iterations and versions of its Opera Browser developed for all kinds of platforms, including Windows, Java ME, Symbian, BlackBerry, Bada OS, Windows Phone, Windows 10 Mobile, Android, and iOS.

In 2016, the company was later acquired by a Chinese conglomerate, and it has since branched out into FinTech, ride hailing, and now smartphone manufacturing.

There are two different Olla phones on the way, it appears – one with triple rear camera and the other with a dual rear camera. The former features a motorized pop-up selfie camera, while the latter has a punch hole in the display housing the selfie camera.

There is no way to confirm it now, but the model with a motorized pop-up camera should be the more expensive of the two.

Both upcoming Olla smartphones appear to fit into the mid-range market. It does not appear that either of them is an entry-level device.

Olla Note 3

On Saturday, February 1st, 2020, Mister Mobility tweeted that the first Opera smartphone to be launched would likely be the Olla Note 3:

We will have more details for you.

Update: OLLA Phones Launches Six (6) Smartphones

Information reaching us has it that OLLA Phones are launching six (6) models, not two. None of them is a premium device. The devices range from basic, entry-level smartphones to mid-range phones. Clearly, OLLA is looking to play in the same space as itel, TECNO, and Infinix.

The complete list of first generation OLLA smartphones from Opera are:

  1. OLLA Note 3.
  2. OLLA V9 Pro.
  3. OLLA M8 Plus.
  4. OLLA M8.
  5. OLLA M1 Lite.
  6. OLLA M6.

This is a full frontal attack on the market by Opera, tackling multiple price points and segments at the same time.
