The days of carrying multiple SIM cards around so as to avoid being stranded due to no coverage from your primary service provider may become a thing of the past, if plans to establish roaming service in Nigeria are actualised.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has granted approval for two mobile network operators (MNOs) to carry out roaming trials.
A national romancing service means that an MTN user can move around the country freely and not lose service even where MTN has no coverage. His phone will simply latch on to any other available network for voice, SMS, and data.
The two telecom operators involved in the national roaming trial are MTN and 9Mobile. During the trials, 9mobile subscribers will be able to roam on MTN when outside 9mobile coverage area, and vice versa.
The NCC statement says that the trials cover a number of local governments in Ondo State in South Western Nigeria. Those areas have been designated as national roaming geographic areas.
The National Roaming trials are for a period of three months, from August 1, 2020 to October 31, 2020.
