Internet subscriptions in Nigeria hit 120 million

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has published the latest internet users statistics for Nigeria. According to the telecom regulatory body, Nigeria now has 119,506,430 Internet users split among the four GSM operators, 9mobile, Airtel, Globacom, and MTN**.

Widespread Internet connection in Nigeria is made possible thanks to the Big 4, as the four biggest telecom operators are called. MTN has the largest chunk of the market witha 42% share, followed by Airtel, Glocacom, and 9mobile, in that order.

Smile and Ntel, both exclusively 4G wireless providers, have a total of 360,868 Internet users on their combined networks, while fixed wirless operators have a meagre 9,999 Internet subscribers between them.

Besides the above, there are about 40 registered Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in Nigeria that provide a Internet service to a combined 400,000 subscribers. Some of the leading ISPs include Spectranet and Swift.

In all, there are just a little over 120 million Internet suscribers in Nigeria. Of this total, the NCC website puts the number of broadband subscriptions at 64,332,974. That is a 33.70% broadband penetration.
