The ₦3,000 MTN 6.75GB Value Data Plan Is My New Choice

Posted by

Finally, MTN has pulled my favourite data plan – the 5GB XtraSpecial plan. It used to cost me ₦1,500 monthly. I only found out yesterday when I needed to renew my data subscription. I went back and forth in the MyMTN NG app but could not find it. It was time for me to move on and find another plan.

Now, my needs are clear: I am not looking for the data plan with the biggest possible volume. I have unlimited WiFi for both work and play. The only times that I need mobile Internet are when I am outside and during WiFi outages. As such, my mobile data consumption is low.

What I need is the data plan that offers me the best possible value for money at the lowest possible monthly cost. I found three options: the new 6.75GB Value Data plan, the 14.5GB Value Data plan, and the 3.5GB Weekly plan. Let’s explore them.

6.75GB Value Data Plan for 3000 naira

This does not match the value that I was getting on XtraSpecial, but it is the closest I have found so far. It costs twice what I was paying for the 5GB XtraSpecial plan and gives me 35% more data. Like I said, I don’t use a lot of mobile data ordinarily, so it should do.

Also, I need to mention that I could not find the 6.75GB Value Data plan on MTN’s website. It isn’t listed there (or it wasn’t at the time I went looking); only on the app. So, you need to get the app if you want to subscribe to this. It is also available via USSD: dial *131# > Data Plans > XtraValue > Value Data.

14.5GB Value Data Plan for 5000 naira

This plan is even better value for money that the 6.75GB plan. The only problem is that I ordinarily do not need this much mobile data in a month. Remember that I have unlimited home/office internet for most heavy of the heavy lifting. Perhaps this will be a good choice for the times when I am doing a fair bit of travelling and so need to depend more on mobile data for a period.

3.5GB Weekly Plan for 1,500 naira

The idea behind me picking this as an option is that if I subscribed to this weekly, I would end up with 14GB for the month (you know, 4 times 3.5GB) for ₦6,000. Which is not bad. The clause is that I do not believe that I need that much mobile data monthly. Plus, who needs the hassle of having to renew a subscription each week? It is tedious. But the 14.5GB Value Data plan is definitely more value for money. However, should I exhaust my data and need a small top-up, this looks like something I can fall back on.

7GB Monthly Plan

This plan deserves a honorary mention – at least for the benefit of those who might want it. The 7GB monthly plan is good value for money, too. And it it would cost me is to pay ₦500 extra. It offers 7GB data for use any time, as well as 2GB for All Night Streaming. Not bad at all. It just doesn’t serve my specific needs. That thing about WiFi being available.

My Choice

For now, I am going with the 6.75GB value data plan. And I can take up any of the other options as the situation may require. Do any of the data plans mentioned in this article cater to your specific needs?
