No Loose Guard: Now that BBNaija Season 9 is over….

What next for me now that BBNaija Season 9 “No Loose Guard” is over?

I am not a huge fan of television. For the most part, it serves as a provider of background noise for me when I am working or carrying out some other activity. But once a year, I spend more time on the TV than usual. More deliberate time. Once a year when BBNaija is airing.

During those three months, I am either watching the show on the Internet-connected TV in the living room or on my AGM G2 Guardian rugged smartphone (see my review), the only other device where I have streaming TV/video apps installed. It is a great device for watching video shows, thanks to the loud and strong speaker, as well as the robust battery life. It is on these two devices that I exclusively watch TV and in this case, Big Brother Naija.

BBNaija is a polarizing show – there are two major camps. The first is made up of those who are vehemently against it, claiming that it promotes immorality among the youths, and the second has those who love it and live and swear by it.

I belong to a niche camp. I don’t particularly care for the two extremes. I do not stay glued to the TV set to follow the show every step of the way. I cannot even name or identify more than a small handfull of the contestants, but I find it to be an entertaining show all the same.

So, every year, for a period of three months, I subscribe to Showmax so I can watch BBNaija. I quickly pick a few favourites – usually someone who is a great dancer. For example, I remember that Alex was a fave of mine in 2018 (season 3). This season 9, it was Onyeka (who eventually came third) that was my fave.

I pick a dancer for obvious reasons. I love to dance and I also enjoy watching people who dance well. There are two aspects of BBNaija that I make out time to watch as much as possible – the Thursday pool parties and the Saturday night parties. These are the highlights of the show for me.

Unless I really have to be somewhere else or doing something else, I make sure I tune in for those two shows. If someone were to say it sounds like I watch BBNaija just for those two activities, I wouldn’t even argue it. Sue me.

This BBNaija season 9, I had also initially hoped that Mayor and Tobiforge would provide some entertainment simply because I had seen and enjoyed some of their social media skits, but they disappointed me and fell out quickly. All that rizz and steeze wasted.

Anyway, BBNaija season 9 has been brought to an end. Big Brother has switched off the lights in the house and Kelly Rae has been declared as the winner of this season. It is time for me to cancel my Showmax subscription till next year when season 10 starts. It is an odd thing, this annual ritual of mine.

I have no other TV subscriptions – not Netflix, not Prime Video, and not DStv. Actually, I replaced DStv with Showmax. Like I said, I am not a big fan of television. And now that BBNaija Season 9 is done and dusted, I must return to living in my cave of little to no TV till the next season. Or perhaps till Mrs. Mo needs to catch up with the latest episodes of Wura, which appears to be her current favourite show on TV.
