5G in Nigeria

As 5G networks begin to rollout in cities around the world, the question of when we will see 5G in Nigeria arises.

There have been reports that Nigerian telecoms regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission, has “earmarked three spectrum bands 26 GHz, 38GHz and 42GHz bands for trial in Lagos and other parts of the country” [1].

In 2018, the regulator conducted a stakeholders’ forum to develop a regulatory framework in preparation for the rollout of 5G technology iby 2020.

Beyond that, nothing much has happened with regards to the emergence of 5G networks in Nigeria.

MTN Nigeria’s CEO has been quoted as saying that the network is ready to roll out 5G by 2020. But the network’s Group CEO, Rob Shuster, has been reported as saying that Africa is not ready for next-generation 5G network. “What we are doing now is to learn from the technology and get our network ready for it but I think 3G is much more relevant in most of our markets,” he said [2].
