Affordable Alternatives to MTN 15GB Digital Bundle

Posted by

A few days ago, subscribers on the MTN network woke up to find that the company had hiked the price of a favourite data plan of theirs – the MTN 15GB Digital Bundle from ₦2,000 to ₦6,000. This particular plan has a 7-day validity period. Subscribing once every week used to mean that users get 60GB for ₦8,000 monthly.

The increase from ₦2,000 to ₦6,000 weekly is a whopping 200% increase in tariff. Subscribers to this bundle will now pay three times what they used to pay. As expected, this development has been met with cries of pain and anguish.

Looking through the available data bundles on the MTN network, I immediately noticed that the tariff hike was not across all bundles. As a matter of fact, as at the time of this article, most data bundles were still at their former prices.

So, I went looking for alternatives to the 15GB Digital Bundle – data plans that do not cost as much as the hiked tariff even if they are not as affordable as the plan used to be.

Alternative options to the MTN 15GB Digital Bundle

In the MTN NG app, navigate away from the Digital Bundle category and look under the Data Bundles category. There lies some of our best alternatives. We are looking at Weekly plans here, too.

5GB Weekly Plan. This costs ₦1,500 for 7 days. Subscribe to three of this weekly and you get 15GB for ₦4,500. It is not as cheap as the ₦2,000 you were paying before, but it is still more affordable than the new ₦6,000 tariff.

7GB Weekly Plan. This costs ₦2,000 for 7 days. Subscribe to this twice in a week to get 14GB for ₦4,000. Again, this is not as affordable as the old ₦2,000 for the 15GB Digital Bundle, but it is definitely more affordable than the new ₦6,000 price.

These are the best alternatives to the MTN 15GB Weekly Digital Bundle that I have been able to find. Neither of them are as affordable as what you used to pay, but I doubt there is any way to avoid paying more for data at this time.

Also, I might have missed something, but I will update this article as soon as I find any other data plan that can make your pain less intense.

Always-on Plans: If you can live with the limitations of the MTN Always-on data plans, you should have a look at them, as they are great value for money. For example, one of them gives you 45GB of data for 30 days for just ₦6,000. No bad; right? But there is a limitation. Get the details HERE.

NB: Note that even these alternatives might still have their tariffs reviewed when MTN executes a general upward tariff review, which we hear that NCC has approved. So, buckle up.

Referring to the multiple taxes, levies, and increases in fees across multiple industries in the country, someone said that Nigerians are in soup. I replied that Nigerians are now the soup. Buckle up, friends. This storm is going to be a rough one. May the force be with you.
