MediaTek announces Helio G200, and it is not exactly a totally new chipset

Contrary to expectations in some quarters that the Helio G99 will be the end of 4G choosers for smartphones, chip maker MediaTek has announced another one (after the Helio G100 announced a few months ago), the Helio G200.

However, the Helio G200 is not exactly an entirely new chip; like the Helio G100, it is also essentially an enhanced version of the Helio G99. According to reports, the Helio G200 delivers about 10% performance improvement over the Helio G100.

What is a chipset?

Imagine your phone is like a tiny, super-smart brain. The chipset is the part of the phone that acts like the brain’s command center. It controls everything—how fast your phone runs, how smoothly apps open, and even how long your battery lasts.

Think of it like the engine of a car. A powerful chipset means your phone runs fast and efficiently, while a weaker chipset might make your phone slower or struggle with demanding tasks like gaming or video editing.

Inside the chipset, there are different parts:

• The processor (CPU) is like the thinking part—it handles all the tasks you give your phone.
• The graphics unit (GPU) helps with visuals, making games and videos look great.
• The modem lets your phone connect to mobile networks for calls and internet.
• In recent times, advanced chipsets now include an AI unit as well. This helps the phone do smart tasks, like improving your photos or recognizing voices.

A better chipset means a faster, more efficient phone, while a lower-end chipset can make things feel sluggish. It’s one of the most important things that determines how good a phone really is. That is the role the Helio G200 plays.

What’s new in the Helio G200?

The Helio G200 brings improvements like a slightly higher clock speed for the GPU (from 1.0GHz on the G99 and G100 to 1.1GHz), as well as 12-bit DCG support for better HDR video recording, 4G DC SAR (Dynamic Communication Smart Adaptive Response) for getting better network signal in weak or fringe areas. That’s it.

The first device to use Helio G200

Shortly after MediaTek’s announcement of the Helio G200, TECNO released a statement of theirs to say that their upcoming Spark 40 series will be the first smartphone to use the Helio G200 chipset.

The TECNO Spark 40 series is being expected in July.

Any improvement in performance, no matter how small, is welcome; right? Just remember that the G200 is at heart still the Helio G99 from years ago.
