What is APN?

Think of APN settings as a secret code that gives your smartphone access to the Internet via your mobile network operator. Or think of it as an address which your phone uses to find your mobile network’s Internet.

In the early days of cell phones, we used to manually enter the APN settings if we wanted to use the mobile Internet. But things have gotten much better now. Usually, whenever you insert a SIM card into a modern mobile phone, the network operator’s APN setting is automatically configured over-the-air (OTA) and you can connect immediately.

The APN settings for Airtel Nigeria are configured automatically that way and you should have no trouble.

But sometimes, you do have trouble. Quite a number of Airtel users have complained to my hearing about their data network misbehaving for endless hours, and sometimes for days. During that time, they are unable to use anything that requires an Internet connection.

I experienced it recently when I needed my Airtel line for a task. 24 hours after I had subscribed to a data plan, I was still unable to use the Internet on that line. So, I took a look at the active APN settings in my phone. They were correct. Below are the correct, default APN settings for Airtel Nigeria.

Default APN settings for Airtel Nigeria

If you are using an Airtel Nigeria SIM card, the APN settings that are automatically configured in your phone are as follows:

  • APN: internet.ng.airtel.com
  • Username: internet
  • Password: internet

If they are not automatically configured, you can configure them manually. Go to your phone Settings, select Network settings or Mobile Network settings and create a new APN profile with the above information. Lastly, save the settings and activate the new APN profile to start using Airtel mobile data on your device.

As already mentioned, sometimes, even with the correct default APN settings in place, the Airtel connection is still not working. It is time to change the APN.

Change the APN Settings for Airtel Nigeria to these

If your Airtel Nigeria mobile Internet connection is not working, you may need to change the default APN settings. If the default settings are the problem, changing them will fix the problem and get you connected. Here are the settings to change them to:

  • APN: internet.ng.zain.com
  • Username: internet
  • Password: internet

The only thing you are changing in the Airtel APN settings is the APN itself, the first item. Change it from internet.ng.airtel.com to internet.ng.zain.com, then save the profile and you are ready to go. Airtel mobile data should connect and start working on your device. It worked for me when my phone wouldn’t connect, and I was soon browsing happily.

Our Gen Z and younger readers will wonder what the “zain” in that APN is all about. Here is the short version of the story: once upon a time, from the uncharted regions of mobile technology in Nigeria, there came a network called ECONET Wireless, and ECONET Wireless has actually rebranded five times before it became Airtel. The last brand name before Airtel was Zain. Zain Nigeria.

If you are interested in more details of that story, you can read more about the metamorphoses of ECONET Wireless Nigeria all the way to Airtel Nigeria.

The koko is that the old APN settings for Zain Nigeria still work for Airtel Nigeria, and in my experience, they work better. It is those old Zain APN settings which I changed the default Airtel APN to. Let us hope that Airtel Nigeria does not shut them down.

For now, use the alternative configuration settings. I wish you a better Internet experience on Airtel Nigeria.

  1. This is brilliant write up, you break it down in full details and also included something for the Gen Z to take home, lol. Lately I’ve been experiencing bad and poor network from Airtel, that’s why I switched to MTN, maybe their network signal is no longer strong in my area.

    1. LOL. I am glad you enjoyed reading this.

Indeed, Airtel’s Internet connection has been a pain in the behind. My dad complains. Mrs. Mo complains. I used it recently and had headaches with it. They need to fix up.
