Can you use your US phone in Nigeria? The Complete Travel Guide

If planning to travel from the United States to Nigeria, you want to be sure that your cell phone will work with mobile networks in Nigeria. Why? Compatibility issues. Many people are not aware of the technicalities, but each cell phone or smartphone is designed to support a limited amount of wireless frequency bands. I am writing this to explain everything you need to know about using a US phone in Nigeria.

The first thing to note is that the frequency bands that US carriers support are different from those supported by Nigerian mobile networks. Because of this, some phones that are made specifically for the US market may not support Nigerian frequency bands at all or may not support some Nigerian frequency bands.

What are mobile frequency bands?

A good way to understand mobile or wireless frequency bands is to think of them like the channels on your FM radio. It is FM radio, but each radio station broadcasts on a specific frequency band. The bands that American carriers broadcast on are different from the bands that Nigerian carriers broadcast on. Here is the list of the major 4G LTE frequency bands that US carriers broadcast on:

• Band 2: 1900 MHz
• Band 4: 1700 MHz
• Band 5: 850 MHz
• Band 12: 700 MHz
• Band 13: 700 MHz

Nigerian mobile frequency bands

Here is the list of the 4G LTE frequency bands used by Nigerian mobile networks:

• Band 3: 1800 MHz
• Band 7: 2600 MHz
• Band 8: 900 MHz
• Band 20: 800 MHz

As you can see, the bands are different. The good thing is that most US phones support more than the US frequency bands that I listed above earlier. Many of them also support Band 3 (1800 MHz) and Band 8 (900 MHz) which are widely used in Nigeria. If you own such a phone, it will work in Nigeria.

Using 5G in Nigeria with a US phone

Again, the issue of compatibility applies here. There are differences in 5G frequency support between the two countries. To use 5G in Nigeria, your cell phone has to support the 5G frequency bands used in Nigeria. These bands are: n1, n3, n7, n8, n20, n28, and n78.

The good thing is that if it turns out that your US phone is incompatible with these 5G bands, it will switch to 4G LTE to keep you connected, so you are good. Also, note that 5G is available on only two major mobile networks in Nigeria for now: MTN and Airtel.

Most definitely, you can use your US phone in Nigeria, but it has to be a phone that supports the frequency bands used in Nigeria, otherwise it cannot connect to Nigerian mobile networks. You just have to be aware of the chance that yours might be one of the few incompatible ones.
