Sometimes, battles are not lost for want of swords, guns, or horses. Sometimes, it is for the want of horse shoes that a war is lost. This would have been the case of the Nigerian Air force’s operations against Boko Haram insurgents in the North Eastern part of the country. The NAF’s entire Alpha Jet fleet would have been grounded for lack of brake assembly, but for Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM) Company’s intervention.
According to the press release from the NAF, foreign technical support was not coming for the Alpha Jets; it was eventually Innoson that helped to locally modify and overhaul the brake assembly of another aircraft, the Aermacchi MB-339 Albatross (a trainer and light attack jet), for adoption on the Alpha Jets.
This isn’t groundbreaking technology, but history tells us that there is no time like wartime for the development of local technology. Nations rise up to great technological advancements during wars, as they are often forced to look inwards. Nigeria’s military needs to engage local industries more in this way.
Kudos to Innoson, a local automobile manufacturer braving the odds to build their Nigerian dream! God bless our lads in the air force and other arms of the military. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
