After two generations of Camon devices lacking one, TECNO Camon 30 Premier 5G is official with an impressive camera setup that includes a periscope telephoto lens.
I am a lover of TECNO ‘s Camon series. You would perhaps have expected that I’d be more in love with the Phantom series, being the brand’s premium range of devices, but you would be wrong. The Camon series is what excites me. To be more specific, the top model in the Camon series is what excites me.
Currently, that is the Camon 20 Premier, which I am typing this article on. It is a superb budget camera phone, the phone you want to have if you do not want to spend money on a premium flagship camera phone. Unfortunately, it is omitting a crucial lens that I love to have in my preferred camera phones – a telephoto lens.
Its predecessor, the Camon 19 Pro 5G, lacked a telephoto lens too. But before then, the Camon 18 Premier was released with one. It was not a great telephoto lens, I must admit, but it was something. After that, TECNO excluded the telephoto lens from two generations of Camon phones. I ached. I longed. But the Camon 20 Premier is such a good camera phone that it didn’t hurt so badly. As a matter of fact, I have mostly adjusted to living without it, while hoping that the next top Camon phone will fix this omission.

What is special about a telephoto lens in a smartphone?
A telephoto camera in a smartphone is special because it allows for optical zoom, which means you can magnify distant subjects without losing image quality. This is different from digital zoom, which simply enlarges the image and can lead to a loss of detail. Telephoto lenses are particularly useful for capturing subjects that are far away, like wildlife or sports events, where getting physically closer might not be possible or safe.
Additionally, telephoto lenses can help achieve a better composition by allowing for framing flexibility and can provide a different perspective by compressing the distance between objects in the photo. They also tend to have better image stabilization and autofocus capabilities, making it easier to capture sharp, high-quality images even in challenging conditions.
Not everyone will find a telephoto lens useful, so I can understand if most people do not care about it. I find it useful. As a matter of fact, I use it often, hence the dust I kick up about it.
TECNO Camon 30 Premier 5G has a 50MP telephoto lens
Yesterday, at Mobile World Congress, TECNO announced the Camon 30 Premier 5G, and not only does it have a telephoto lens, it is an advanced one – a periscope telephoto lens. It enables 3x optical zoom and 60x hybrid zoom. But even better, all three cameras at the back of the Camon 30 Premier is a 50MP shooter. All three.
There is a 50MP Sony IMX890 (1/1.56”, 1.0µm pixels) wide angle lens with OIS. Then, there is also a 70mm periscope with a 50MP sensor, for image zooming, portrait photos, and macro shots. Lastly, there is a 50MP ultra wide lens for when you need to capture a large group or a wide landscape. But that isn’t all; it gets better.
A 50MP autofocus selfie camera, too
The selfie camera at the front of the Camon 30 Premier 5G is also a 50MP lens. Yes. TECNO went mad with the 50MP cameras this time. That 50MP selfie camera also has autofocus (most selfie cameras are fixed focus). This is music to my ears. Autofocus in a selfie camera makes it more capable for bloggers and bloggers who rely on the front-facing camera of their phone for photos and videos.
Do watch my YouTube video on the 6 ways that the Camon 30 Premier is better than the Camon 20 Premier.
I will not dive into all the other technical stuff – TECNO’s PolarAce Imaging system and others – that the company says will help deliver exceptional images. As long as the Camon 30 Premier’s cameras get the basics right, I will be in mobile photography heaven with it in my hands. TECNO better not mess this up, because I am all hyped up about it. Anyway, if they do mess it up, I will be back here to speak bitterly about it.
