Advantages of rugged phones

Everyone knows the benefits of owning a rugged smartphone. Most people drop their phones too often, for them not to know. Imagine owning a phone that you never have to be afraid of dripping or spilling water on, or sitting on. Yes, that peace of mind is the sum total of the benefits of owning a rugged smartphone.

Rugged phones are thick, but..

But the big issue with rugged phones, literally, is that they are often too big and too heavy. All of that padding to make them shock-proof, break-proof, and water-proof, simply add up in terms of dimensions and weight.

As an example, the AgM G2 Guardian is a hulk, with a thickness of 25.3 mm. For comparison, the Camon 20 Premier is 8.2 mm thick.

The good news with the Motorola Moto Edge 50 is that it is said to be the slimmest MIL-STD-810H smartphone. Motorola has not divulged the exact dimensions of the phone, so we do not know how slim it is yet. But they have our attention with that bold claim. Brilliant marketing.

Now we have to wait to find out how slim this bad boy really is. We won’t have too long to wait, though. The official announcement is on the 1st of August, just a week away, and we shall know it, for sure. Or a leakster will find out and leak it before then. Either way, we have just a week. If Motorola successfully keeps the Moto Edge 50 slimmer than 8.5 mm, they’ve got a winner.

But the main specifications are known already, thanks to a listing on Flipkart.com, one of the few places where we already know it will be sold. The other place you can get one is the Motorola India website. Yes, India gets all the fun that most other countries never get. Not even the US cellphone market is close to the diversity and vibrance of the Indian mobile phone market. Perhaps only China’s phone market is more vibrant. Anyway, here are the specs:

Pricing

There is no official word yet on what the Motorola Moto Edge 50 will cost. The Edge 50 Fusion, which is close in specs but without the military grade features, costs $ 450 (€ 319.99 in Europe, £ 290 in the UK, and ₹ 18,359 in India). If we factor in the MIL-STD-810H toughness, we can expect the Moto Edge 50 to cost some more.
