Hopefully, it is not news to you that the Lagos State government has started setting up speed cameras across the state, starting with three locations. Each location has a defined speed limit and if you exceed the speed limits, the cameras will catch you and you will be fined. The whole process is automated, too.
What are the locations of these speed cameras in Lagos and what are the speed limits and applicable fines for violations?
Locations of Speed Cameras in Lagos
Initial rollout of these speed cameras on Lagos roads are as follows:
- 3rd Mainland bridge: From the moment you get on 3rd Mainland bridge, there is an 80km/h speed limit in effect on the entire stretch of the bridge. If there is one location in Lagos where motorists drive recklessly the most, it is this bridge. Accidents happen on 3rd Mainland bridge much too often. As such, it is no surprise that it was the first spot that a speed camera was installed.
- Alapere-Ogudu road: There is an 80km/h speed limit on this road, as well. It doesn’t matter which direction you are facing, stay below 80km/hour.
- Mobolaji Bank-Anthony Way from Maryland end to Ikeja now has a 60km/hour speed limit.
How Lagos speed cameras work
As already said, the whole process is automated. If a speed camera catches you going above the limit, the system flags your vehicle and generates a fine ticket sent to you via SMS. You have seven (7) days to pay your fine. If you do not, your car is subsequently blacklisted and will be impounded on sight by officials of the state.
If impounded, you know that means extra wahala. You really do not want that trouble for yourself. Just slow down, so you don’t get caught in the first place.
Fines for violating speed limits in Lagos
The fine for violating speed limits on Lagos State is ₦50,000 per violation. Imagine being caught along each of those three spots in one day. You have won a jackpot: ₦150,000 fine.
What are you in a hurry about? Slow down and take it easy. We all have only this one life. Let’s play it cool and safe for ourselves and for other road users.
Other traffic monitoring cameras in Lagos State
Apart from speed cameras, you also hopefully already know that Lagos State government already had other types of monitoring cameras active at certain spots in Lagos.
For example, there are cameras that check for the registration, insurance, and road worthiness status of your vehicle. Similar to the way that the new speed cameras work, offending vehicles are flagged by the system and fines generated and sent via SMS to the vehicle owners.
These cameras are installed and active at Allen Avenue junction, Nurudeen Olowopopo Road, Mobolaji Bank-Anthony way, and Ogudu-Alapere road.
Some of these cameras are also equipped to monitor violations such as running red lights, lane indiscipline, illegal U-turns, and reverse driving on highways. Fine differ for different types of violations.
The Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) is responsible for the operation of these cameras and execution of fines and other penalties.
As at April 2024, there were no less than 52 of these automatic number plate recognition cameras installed across Lagos. More locations are expected to be equipped with the new speed cameras in the coming months and years.
Hooefully, we will experience fewer traffic violations, accidents, and loss of limbs and lives on Lagos roads as motorists comply with speed limits and other regulations.
