As technology keeps advancing, it has become more and more apparent that Artificial Intelligence is the new backbone of mobile phone technology. In the past, we covered Apple Intelligence and its integration in the upcoming iPhone 16 and Google’s Gemini integration into its upcoming Google Pixel 9 Series.
With Artificial Intelligence becoming, not only becoming the building block but also, the cornerstone of mobile technology, it is important that we have good knowledge about what this new and advancing market is becoming, highlighting the models of the three main mobile phone brands; iPhone, Samsung and Google, looking into their features.

What is Artificial Intelligence?
Artificial Intelligence goes beyond creating pictures with prompts and having assistance to write that essay or test. According to IBM, AI is technology that enables computers and machines to simulate human intelligence and problem-solving capabilities. On its own or combined with other technologies (e.g., sensors, geolocation, robotics) AI can perform tasks that would otherwise require human intelligence or intervention.
AI automates repetitive learning and discovery through data, is apparent in computers that play chess, self-driving cars, and banking systems to detect fraudulent activity, and has lot of other functionalities but how does this work in the mobile phone industry
Apple Intelligence
Around June 2024, at WWDC 2024, Apple unveiled Apple Intelligence, its long-awaited, ecosystem-wide push into generative AI As the earlier rumors at the time suggested, the new feature is called Apple Intelligence. The company promised the feature will be built with safety at its core, along with highly personalized experiences.
“Most importantly, it has to understand you and be grounded in your personal context, like your routine, your relationships, your communications, and more,” CEO Tim Cook noted. “And of course, it has to be built with privacy from the ground up together. All of this goes beyond artificial intelligence. It’s personal intelligence, and it’s the next big step for Apple.”

Features of Apple Intelligence
By integrating ChatGPT from OpenAI, Apple Intelligence allows for the following features:
- Apple Intelligence powers new Writing Tools, which help you find just the right words virtually everywhere you write.
- Apple Intelligence enables delightful new ways to express yourself visually. Create fun, original images and brand-new Genmoji that are truly personal to you.
- Siri draws on Apple Intelligence for all-new superpowers. With an all-new design, richer language understanding, and the ability to type to Siri whenever it’s convenient for you, communicating with Siri is more natural than ever.
- Apple Intelligence is designed to protect your privacy at every step. It’s integrated into the core of your iPhone, iPad, and Mac through on-device processing.
Samsung’s Galaxy AI
Samsung announced a new AI system, earlier this year, at its Unpacked 2024 event that will change the device experience substantially. Galaxy AI is the new AI system from Samsung that will be present in the company’s many devices moving forward. It will streamline existing features, add new tools for users, and generally improve the functionality of the device in line with current AI technology.
According to Samsung’s press release, Galaxy AI is built on our innovation heritage and deep understanding of how people use their phones. We’re excited to see how our users around the world empower their everyday lives with Galaxy AI to open up new possibilities.
Functions of Galaxy AI
Samsung has characterized the functions of Galaxy AI into the categories of:
- Everyday Functionality which involves; Live Translate which provides two-way, real-time audio and text translations on calls, Interpreter which translates real-time conversations in split screen, so you can talk to someone in-person and still understand them, Chat Assist which generates text conversations to match tone and content, Note Assist which creates summaries, produces templates, and generates cover art in the Samsung Notes app, Transcript Assist which transcribe, summarizes and translates voice recordings, Circle to Search which allows users to search for anything on the screen by simply circling, highlighting, tapping, or scribbling on an image or word.
- Creativity which involves; Edit Suggestion – provides in-app suggestions immediately after an image is taken to subtly improve the composition of the photo, Generative Edits which expands images by filling in the background and borders when necessary, Instant Slow-mo which generates additional frames in a video to create the slow-motion effect with detail and quality.
- Security; Galaxy AI being installed directly on smartphones is connected to the internet or an external source. Subsequently, data is more secure, given that these devices are “end-to-end secure hardware” with “real-time threat detection and collaborative protection,” according to Samsung.
Google’s Gemini
Gemini, formerly known as Bard, is the result of large-scale collaborative efforts by teams across Google, including our colleagues at Google Research. It was built from the ground up to be multimodal, which means it can generalize and seamlessly understand, operate across and combine different types of information including text, code, audio, image and video.
It is an AI tool that simulates human conversations using natural language processing and machine learning. In addition to supplementing Google Search, Gemini can be integrated into websites, messaging platforms or applications to provide realistic, natural language responses to user questions.
Functions of Gemini
The main functions that Gemini offers include;
- Text generation – You can generate text for various business, personal, academic, or creative applications.
- Image analysis – You can use the image to add context to your prompt or direct Gemini to do something with it.
- Image generation – You can also ask Gemini to use a picture you upload as a reference or an inspiration. It’s capable of generating images in any style. For example, you can specify if you want your image to look photorealistic, abstract, hand-drawn, or like an oil painting.
- Code writing – Gemini can translate plain language instructions into code. It writes code in more than 20 programming languages,
- Summarize text – Gemini can scan texts and summarize them for you. You can paste any text or URL into the chatbot.
Gemini offers a whole lot of other functions.
With the future of mobile phone technology being driven by Artificial Intelligence, phone brands are moving to incorporate AI models into their new phone releases which would serve as a stepping stone into a world of AI functionalities that is just getting started.
