After the excitement of June, the month of July 2024 has taken off with HMD Global putting out two smartphone models on sale in Nigeria. We are also expecting a handful of smartphones from other phone brands, in the course of the month.

HMD Pulse Plus
HMD Pulse Plus is a lower midrange smartphone that was released in April 2024. It runs Android 14 and is powered by the lowly Unisoc T606 chipset. That means this is a 4G LTE device. There is no 5G here. RAM options include 4GB, 6GB, and 8GB. There is only one internal storage option: 128GB.

The display is a 6.65-inch, 720p, IPS LCD panel, with a centred punch hole and 90Hz refresh rate. The selfie camera is an 8MP unit, while the rear camera features a 50MP main lens. Powering the phone is a good-sized 5000mAh battery. All you have is 10W charging, though.
The Pulse Plus is available in four colour schemes – Apricot Crush, Midnight Blue, and Glacier Green – and you can buy the 4GB RAM option now for just ₦170,490. Have a look on Jumia.com.ng. If you are reading this from outside Nigeria, especially from a European country, the price is €156.
HMD Aura
HMD Aura is a more affordable model, with lower specs in general. What is odd, though, is that it has a higher screen resolution (900×1600 pixels) than the Pulse Plus (720×1612 pixels). Really odd. The 5MP selfie camera is embedded in a waterdrop notch. Screen size is 6.56 inches, too.
Anyway, the Aura runs Android 13, is powered by the even lowlier Unisoc SC9863A1, and has only one memory option – 4GB RAM with 64GB storage. Battery capacity is 5000mAh and is coupled with 10W. The fingerprint scanner is located on the back side of the phone. The rear camera is a 13MP lens.

HMD Aura is available in two colour options – Glacier Green and Indigo Black – and it sells for ₦129,136 on Jumia.com.ng at the time of writing this article. In Europe, it has a €110 price tag.
Philips Essence 10 and Essence 20
The last time I saw a Philips smartphone was before the launch of the first iPhone. The brand disappeared for a long time in most places in the world. I have to say that I didn’t see the coming of Philips Mobile to Nigeria coming. But they are here now and already selling two budget phones, Essence 10 and Essence 20. July 2024 is really turning out to be the month of new things in the Nigerian smartphone market. Somebody shout hallelujah!

Other Phones We Are Expecting
We are expecting a few phone models in July 2024 from OPPO Nigeria, and these will likely include the OPPO A3, A3 Pro, and Reno12 F. The usual suspects, TECNO and Infinix, will likely release a handful of phone models this month, as well.
ZTE Mobile Nigeria, which has been flying below the radar since 2018, is in the news again. The brand held a launch event in June and announced a few new Nubia phone models for the Nigerian market. Those phones will likely go on sale this July, as they are already on pre-order. They include the camera-centric Nubia Focus Pro 5G and the gaming-centric Nubia Neo 2, among others. July 2024 just might turn out to be very exciting.
