Nokia West Africa is leveraging on the reach of MobilityNigeria to engage their target audience in Nigeria and beyond. This partnership will see the creation of a special section on the Mobility Nigeria site (to be named “Nokia Rave”).

This will give Nokia access to release news, information and support to their teeming customers across the country and beyond right here on Mobility.com.ng. Nokia will also offer promos from time to time via Nokia Rave.

Nokia has by far the largest marketshare of both feature phones and smartphones in the Nigerian mobile market and are looking to consolidate on that strong position. Nokia’s commitment to the development of the mobile ecosystem in Nigeria has seen the mobile giant engaging users and developers in a variety of ways over the last several months.

Nokia was also the first mobile manufacturer to respond positively to MobilityNigeria’s call for mobile brands, resellers and retailers to provide loan devices for review here on Mobility.com.ng. The Finnish company has outdone expectations already by making available two high-end Symbian devices, the Nokia N8 and the Nokia E7, for review.

Last week, in a phone chat with Yomi Adegboye, publisher of Mobility Nigeria, Nokia West Africa’s communications manager hinted that Nokia would also love to make the Nokia E7 available for pre-order via the MobilityNigeria website. Yomi became the proud owner of a brand new E7 last week, courtesy of Nokia, making him one of the very first individuals in the country to own the flagship device.

The October 2010 edition of the Smartphone Show has come and gone. This afternoon at the Guest House, University of Lagos, seven (7) of us gathered, talked, shared and demonstrated.

The discussions were rich and it was clear that everyone there was passionate about mobile devices and services. Four smartphone platforms were represented – Windows Mobile, Android, Symbian and Blackberry.

The discussions and interactions were so engaging that the meeting easilly went on till almost 4.00 p.m. when I had to reluctantly bring it to a halt. If you missed this maiden edition, you missed history!

But after all the talking and demonstrating, there was one more task left to do.

WIN-a-Smartphone Promo Winners!

For the last two months, Mobility Nigeria has run a promo in which participants had the opportunity to win one top-end smartpjhone and two other phones. All persons who purchased a phone from the phone store during the duration, as well as all persons who purchased our special Blogsite offer, were entered for the promo.

At today’s event, we solicited the help of three participants to help draw names of the winners. The picture above shows Belushi helping to pick the name of the 2nd Prize winner. Let the drums roll, as I present to you the winners and their prizes!

A few things to chew on:
- mobile web traffic on the site dropped a bit from the previous month’s figures
- Apple is back in the top brands chart. Samsung makes a debut.
- The UK is back in the top countries chart
- Nokia still rules the top phones chart 100% but with a new champion taking a chunky 7.1% of mobile traffic- the 5800. The ex-champion, the Nokia 3110 Classic, is now in 3rd place.

Don’t forget, this is all MobilityNigeria.com traffic only, but then these statistics may present some fair indicators about mobile web traffic in Nigeria in general.

On the 7th of June 2008, the first article on MobilityNigeria was published.

From the 82 unique visitors and 1,127 page views registered in that month, MobilityNigeria has grown in leaps and bounds to register 9,610 unique visitors and 16,874 page views in December 2009.

In addition, WebTrends Nigeria, a site that monitors and ranks Nigerian websites currently ranks Mobility Nigeria as number 31 in the country.

To be honest, the traffic between June and December 2008 was not quite encouraging, but we remember that Yomi and Dayo just kept going.

Powered by CDMA?

Incidentally, while the majority of articles on this site have been focused on the GSM side of mobile technology in Nigeria, it is interesting to note that the very first article refered to earlier was Yomi’s escapade with browsing on a CDMA smartphone, the Treo P700 on the Reltel (now ZOOMmobile) network.

We are agreed that there is a need to tip the scales back a bit and put up more information about CDMA-based mobile technology. Expect to see more news, features and reviews from that side of the divide from now. And no; we will not be neglecting GSM in any way at all.

Advertisers, Sponsors, Phone & Manufacturers & Retailers

It takes a lot to keep a website like this going. We have to purchase or trade-in phones (whether we really need them or not) in order to have reviews. We spend huge amounts on purchasing mobile internet access and airtime from time to time in order to stay current with what is happening on various networks. Then, of course, there are web services expenses to take care of.

This is an invitation to advertisers. MobilityNigeria will give your business websites good exposure. You can even decide to sponsor the site. In this case, only your ads will feature on the site and the entire site branded completely to your corporate colours.

We invite phone manufacturers (Samsung, Nokia, and LG – you guys have a presence here in Nigeria) and retailers (even networks too) to step up and provide loan units for reviews. Two or three weeks and we’ll have the loan units returned to you in tip-top shape. Our reviews are good publicity for your products, services and/or shops.

2009 is racing to an end. We thought it would be a good idea to conduct a user-centred phone award. That means you, the users, get to vote for the phones that you have used this year and consider top-notch. You will also tell us what exactly it is that you like about the phones you pick.

You are welcome to nominate three devices only for each category, listing them in the order of your preference. Please submit your nominations using the comments box below.

We will then collate the nominations and announce the top devices in each category.

We are glad to introduce the new discussion forums here at MobilityNigeria. Some of our discussions here on the blog have attracted so many comments that certain individual pages are becoming quite heavy (especially bearing in mind that mobile phones are often used to access this site).

As such we have introduced a feature that closes off comments after a period of two weeks of the existence of an article. Yet, there are those who may wish to discuss a particular topic beyond that period. In addition, there are those who have questions outside of the scope of the existing articles here. Individuals who fall into these categories can simply start a thread on the forum to pursue their objectives.
