The standard mobile internet configuration for GloMobile subscribers on a data plan is named GloFlat and has the following parametres:

• APN (access point name): gloflat
• Username: flat
• Password: flat

Once you exhaust your bundle plan though, you will find that you are unable to browse on a pay-as-you-go basis with the above configuration. To be able to do that (and have your browsing session billed from your airtime at 5k per second), you require the GloDirect configuration settings, as follows:

• APN (access point name): glosecure
• Username: gprs
• Password: gprs

You can have both settings saved on your device if you think you will be needing both at one point or the other. Then you can switch as required.

Don’t forget, data bundles use GloFlat. Pay-as-you-browse uses GloDirect.

I knew I was going to get your attention with that heading.

It is really very simple: when you load N500 or N1,000 airtime on your Glo line, you receive bonus data on your line, whether you are aware of it or not.

PS: Perhaps I should also mention that I am on Glo Infinito. I do not know if the situation is the same across all Glo prepaid packages.

Here’s how to find out what bonus data you’ve got: dial 124 and press 1 to listen to the nice lady tell you your account balance. Do keep a pen and paper handy, as she speaks out your data balance; it gets pretty long!

I checked mine earlier this morning and found mine had accumulated to 80GB over the last several months. Great. Its browsing time!

How To Use Your Bonus Data
The trick is, your bonus data can only be used with Glo’s Glodirect configuration settings, so you have to use those. Here they are:

Configuration name: Glodirect
APN: glosecure
Username: gprs
Password: gprs

It was a stormy and frustrating weekend for GloMobile subscribers who suddenly found their lines without service. Service seems to have been fully restored as at yesterday evening.

Globacom has issued a public announcement on the incident:

The management of Globacom Limited wishes to inform the general public that due to a fire incident which occurred at one of our key installations in Lagos on Thursday night, there has been a temporary disruption in services.

The fire incident has since been brought under control and all efforts have been initiated to quickly restore services.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused our valued customers.

We thank you all for your understanding and support.

Its good to have our lines active once again, and in my opinion Globacom acted fast in restoring operations. Yes; it was painful while it lasted, but all’s well now.

Thanks to a heads-up from a regular here on the forums, we are able to announce that subscribers of Glo can now watch DStv live on their mobile phones as the company rolls out the DStvMOBILE service. The service is available to subscribers with DVB-H enabled handsets.

Glo offers channels such as Africa Magic, Magic World, Africa Magic Yoruba, Africa Magic Hausa, Channel O, Sound city, Cartoon Network, TBN, Super Sport 7, Super Sport 9, Super Sport Blitz and NTA Plus bundled on the nokia 5330, similar to the MTN offer.

According to a news report from Marketing World magazine, “DStvMOBILE from Glo comes with Nokia 5330, one month free High Speed Internet bundle and free DStvMOBILE subscription until 31 March, 2011.”

The service is available, to start with, in 10 Nigerian cities including Lagos, Ibadan, Benin, Asaba, Onitsha, Enugu, Aba, Port Harcourt, Abuja and Kaduna.

Back in September, GloMobile announced Glo Infinito, a package that offers subscribers call tarrifs of 25 kobo per second. Back then, the service was limited to specific regions of Nigeria – and Lagos was not included.

However, after kay123, a regular here mentioned that he was billed at the Glo Infinito tariffs while in Lagos, I have been able to confirm that I am now being billed 25 kobo per second now too. I placed a 1 minute 45 second call to a contact on MTN this morning and was billed N26.75 only.

With just 25 kobo per second for all calls to any network in Nigeria without any rental or access fee. Note again: there is no daily rental or access charge.
