A 650MHz Processor On An Android Smartphone

The VMK Elikia is a budget Android smartphone “designed” in the Congo. It has also been reported as the first African designed smartphone. That sounds wrong, if you ask me. What happened to Pliris Mobile’s Blaze and Blaze+, both of which we are told were designed here in Nigeria and which have been around for several months? Perhaps we need to ask more detailed questions?

Anyway, the Elikia is specified with a 650 MHz processor, and my first reaction was, “No way!” I have reviewed a number of budget Android smartphones here, including the Samsung Pocket, Huawei U8180 Gaga, and LG E400. Each of these devices sport a 800 MGHz processor, and performance isn’t anything remarkable. Someone mentioned to me that all these devices run smooth. I think that it is possible to hold that opinion only if one has never used anything more capable – like the Pliris Blaze+, HTC One X, or Samsung’s upper Galaxy range.

Anyway, I have my doubts about how well a 650 MHz processor will run on an Android smartphone. However, Elikia does have 512 MB RAM, which is twice what the Pocket and Gaga offer, and about 50% more than what the Optimus E400 offers. Perhaps that will make up for the lower clocked CPU and produce good enough performance? In all probability, only a proper review will tell.

If you are interested in more specs of the VMK Elikia, it runs Android 2.3.6 gingerbread, has a 3.5-inch 320 x 480 pixels resolution, capacitive display, a 5 megapixel camera, 126 MB internal memory, microSD card slot, and a 1,300mAh battery. Not a bad package in all.

What do you think? Do you give a 650 MHz processor on Android any chance? Would you recommend such a smartphone if the price is right?

    Anyway, I have my doubts about how well a 650 MHz processor will run on an Android

    In a previous post, someone commented that 1500 maH should be the minimum capacity of any smartphone battery you go for. This is supposed to ensure you do not keep running out of juice prematurely.

    Now, this post is implying that a 650 MHz processor would not be adequate on an Android device.

    I would liken these two submissions to saying that a 1.2 litre engine would not be adequate on a Honda.

    Would that not amount to a sweeping generalization?

    True, the performance of the other ANDROID devices mentioned would be a good guide of what to expect on this one .

    But…

    There are many design decisions that would determine whether a particular battery capacity is adequate, a specific processor speed would lead to mediocre performance or a specific engine size would limit the ooooomph.

    Of course, the faster the processor the better the performance, all other things being equal.

    I have reviewed a number of budget Android smartphones here, including the Samsung Pocket, Huawei U8180 Gaga, and LG E400. Each of these devices sport a 800 MGHz processor, and performance isn’t anything remarkable.

    If you want the power of a 5000-watt sound system, you have no right complaining about the middling performance of a lower_powered music device.

    Besides, ‘adequacy’ can be a very subjective thing. It is like ‘beauty’

    I may feel that a 1.6 litre engined car is good enough for me, while the other folk out there may never consider anything less than a 2.4 V6_powered one.

    You may have a point there. But I would never be caught dead with a 650MHz processor powered phone. It’s just….err….. inadequate. And to label that an African phone is a great insult on this continent.

    This almost goes back to the discussion I have with my die-hard WP-loving brother whose complaint about Android is that it’s too fragmented.

    The VMK Elikia will appeal to some and it will find a market. Not everyone has a Samsung, LG or even Tecno budget. I have a friend with a SGS Advanced and she hardly uses it. All she wants the phone for is to make calls and send texts.

    Likewise, the Elikia owners may not be looking for bells and whistles and apps galore. The processor in numbers may not mean anything if it’s their first smartphone and they want to make calls and send texts.

    If that phone truly has 512MB, then you will be very surprised how better it will perform compared to other phones mentioned here. I have said it before. You can only go wrong with say, 256MB on any Android device.

    Fit the Galaxy S3 with 256MB of RAM and you will realize that the quad core processor is a waste of resources. Even a single core processor of say 1GHz and 1GB of RAM will outperform it. I think about 512MB ought to be the threshold value for RAM on Android and Even 600MHz processor will give an acceptable performance on such device.

    Good talk. But the talk of anything cheap with poor quality for Africa should stop. Yes, we accept we may not be as rich, but that by no means translates to having poor taste.

    Anyone looking for a phone to make calls and send texts have no business with smartphones. Yes, I knows a Senator of the Federal Republic who carries two Galaxy Note 2 phones but does not even know how to open a web page talk less of being able to use the S-pen. There are geeks out there looking for money to buy and put such phones into good use.

    oh, no! not another sweeping generalization! Just like the 1500 milliamperes hour supposedly being the minimum battery power rating for a smartphone!

    the volume of RAM you need is surely a function of the level of multitasking you plan to do, not so?

    if you are not an app Junky, and not a Power User, what would you need 512MB on your smartphone for? Is that not superfluous?

    And categorically saying that the volume of RAM is more impactful on performance, more than raw processing power, will need some proving!

    Yeah, you do have a point there but you also known that Android has a couple of its own apps to run in the background by default and if you are not an app junkie, you may also not know how to go about exiting these apps that may result to you noticing stutters here and there when opening applications. You need to use Tecno T1 to have an idea of what I’m talking about.

    And categorically saying that the volume of RAM is more impactful on performance, more than raw processing power, will need some proving!

    I’m tempted to take you on that challenge(?) but my fear is that doing justice to it may result to something that’s close to an academic dissertation and this is not the right place for that but be rest assured that increasing the RAM to an extent can actually impact more to the performance of a computer system than increasing the processor speed. That particular instance I gave before could well be very valid.

    @Harry,let us assume, without conceding, that RAM volume has more impact on performance, than raw processing power.

    Now if that is correct, why is it that an Octet-cored processor has the tech world drooling, whereas a device with 4-Gigabytes RAM hardly causes an uproar anywhere?

    Specifically, why is more energy being expended in crafting multi_cored devices, when far less can be dissipated in making higher capacity RAMs?

    Just so we know where we stand, I didn’t categorically say that more RAM boosts performance more than higher processor speed, but my point basically is that there should be a balance in the supplied RAM and the processor speed.

    In the case we have in this article, the author mentioned that he has tried other devices with better processor speeds but with lower RAM vales and was wondering if the 512MB of RAM will help do the magic.

    Of course, RAM alone cannot perform processing, which is the essence of computing. But I’m saying categorically that a device with say a quad core processor and 256 MB of RAM like the Galaxy S3 will underwhelm in performance when compared with a 1GHz device fitted with 1GB of RAM. I also claimed that the device in question here, if fitted with 512MB of RAM, even with that processor speed of 650MHz, it will outperformed those other devices with 800MHz to 1GHz of processor speed but but only 256MB of RAM.

    @deoladoctor, for the likes of us who are used to navigating our way around these things, many people still want to send texts and talk and nothing more. They end up with an overpowered device simply because there are few options, especially those who opt to go for a contract.

    As for the Senator with two SGN 2s, you should know that someone gets paid to do all that fancy S-Penning and browsing for him!

    Don’t forget thst processor speed isn’t the only parameter here which is going to matter. Apple iPhones are underclocked to run at about half capacity of their processor power, so if this newer design rus a processor which will be capable of less underclocking than the other phones you describe, the performance could be remarkebly good and these 650mz phones prove very good value for money.
