I wanted to see how the X10 Mini Pro stacks up against the current high-end Android phones, so I benchmarked it using Quadrant. Quadrant is a new benchmark for Android devices and supports the following types of performance tests:
* CPU – arithmetic operations, XML parsing, multimedia decoding
* Memory throughput
* I/O – filesystem access and database operations
* 2D graphics
* 3D graphics – OpenGL single-pass and multi-pass rendering with stencil buffers
I ran the Quadrant benchmark process and I am a bit surprised at the results.
Running several tests, the highest figure the Mini Pro hit was 507 and the lowest 456. We’ll adopt the lower figure of 456.
The surprise is that the X10 Mini Pro beat a device like its older sibling, the X10 running a 1 GHz processor and also the Motorola Droid/Milestone. I am also surprised that the HTC Desire (1 GHz processsor, much more RAM and v2.1) barely manages to edge out the X10 Mini Pro.
The smaller display is a strong factor here, as the processor has less pixels to push. Yesterday, a system app showed that the display alone was consuming over 50% of battery power on the X10 Mini Pro. As such, you can imagine that devices with miuch larger displays use up more processor power and eat up more battery life. I’ll focus on battery life on the X10 mini in a later review, but suffice to say that going for a 2.55-inch display may not have been a bad decision by Sony Ericsson at all.

I am expecting a performance boost on the X10 Mini Pro once it gets the v2.1 update that Sony Ericsson promised. Performance tweaking on the Android OS produces significant improvements in each subsequent OS version. Note the improved benchmark results of the Nexus One with v2.2 compared to v2.1. Android.
QWERTY Droids
There are about 16 QWERTY-enabled androids out there now and only the following handful are available in these parts:
- T-mobile G1/Dream
- T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide
- Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Mini Pro
The T-mobile G1/Dream has reached its end of life. That leaves you with the last two options. What you choose will depend on your needs and the size of your purse. The myTouch 3G Slide costs an arm and a leg and has Quadrant benchmark results of 399-408, placing it slightly below the X10 Mini Pro’s 456.
So far, in actual use over the last few days the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro hasn’t given me cause for concern with regards performance. It has felt like a powerhouse inspite of its bite size. Sony Ericsson have optimised the Android OS for the small display and resources. I am liking this device.

Samsung should start releasing android phones to Africa and capture the android market here early before HTC and Sony Ericsson.

i very much support spacyzuma. android is the future in mobile o.s. and the future has started already with all the powerful smartphones they have been running on. i owned an X1 for more than a year which runs on winmo.although i initially enjoyed the experience, the system can be very slow. even after flashing it with a custom rom runinning HTC sense, the excitement had since gone down. then the call for a new toy, started shopping online for my next gadget, eyes were on ios4, windows phone 7 and android. After a detailed analysis of all these platforms, i could only come to the conclusion of getting an android phone, the samsung galaxy s. the flexibility, openness, fast growing apps, updates and bright future of android is all i need to be drawn in.
