In July 2010, a BlackBerry device made an entry into the top 5 phones chart, while a USA mobile network made a debut on the top 5 networks chart.
The Nokia 5800 retained its position as the most used mobile for accessing Mobility Nigeria.
Of the top 5 phones, three (3) are QWERTY keyboard devices, one (1) is touchscreen, and one (1) is regular keypad.

There are very few Android devices being sold and in use here in Nigeria. For some reason, manufacturers who have Android devices in their portfolio are not pushing them here.
I am yet to see Motorola and Samsung, though both have some good devices. For now, Both HTC and SE have only one device each available here.
Unless this scenario changes (or a retailer decides to go the extra mile to push Android into the market), droids will remain insignificant in the Nigerian market.
PS: Lest I forget, the last time I used a droid (G1), Nigeria was not supported in the Android Market either, so there was no access to paid apps then. Google needs to change that too. The Nigerian mobile space can only be ignored to their own detriment.

It’s like a single device for an individual is making the top list. From comments i read here you can know the phones some of us use, A very frequent user of nokia5800 can make the phone rank high.
I use a nokia e63, i’ll visit more frequently possibly my phone may top this month but it will be difficult with an eyebeekay around.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the usage of Nokia 5800 on Mobility Nigeria in July 2010 spans 48 networks. That is certainly not a single individual.
The huge majority of readers of this blog (and of most blogs) never post a comment. The statistics presented in the above report do not indicate the phones used for commenting alone, but for visiting and reading this site, whether or not they comment.
Looking at the user agents on comments alone does not give a true picture.

Really sad about the Android case. I wonder why the manufacturers are averse to bringing in android-based phones.
I sent an enquiry to LG about it and the response I got was that they were currently working on one that could hit naija sometime soon. I just hope it doesn’t delay.
I also hope Google opens up the android market to Nigerians really soon.

glad to know one is in good company as regards the Nokia 5800. it is a sweet minimalist, but functional phone all right.
concerning etisalat”s meteoric rise, it surprises me that the signal level is mostly one bar or none in the Akowonjo area. up till now.
i am also astounded that Zain is number 2, ahead of MTN & Glo.
whereas I would have loved to jump on the Etisalat bandwagon for mobile internet, I am stuck with zain – for now…
their internet service. this past weeks- has borne a depressing similarity to power supply from our PHCN. intermittent.
the moment there is the 100Mb / N1000 equivalent on either Glo or MTN, I will exercise my prostitutional(?) rights & crosscarpet (like our shameless politicians) to smell the other side of the mobile internet divide…

I am surprised that LG answered, but the answer looks very generic. Like its under review. i.e no particular phone or timeline, anyway i think if you sent google a mail, they will open the android app to Nigeria, maybe. I am guessing it’s just standard template on the countries since blackberry app and iphone app(i think) are also closed to Nigeria.
But hey, why worry about Nigeria if you can get just 15% of India, covers every man woman and child in Nigeria.

J2ME/MIDP refers to Java. When you see that term in a user agent, it means that the device is accessing the web via a java browser. Usually, in that case, the specific device itself is not identified.

@quam, the 100Mb/N1000 thingy does PLENTY. that is, if you limit its use to your phone alone, and do not use it for heavy stuff- like downloading monster files.
it is ideal for light use only..
for tethered use, hmm.
by the way, i understand Opera desktop also uses the turbo mode (the same tech used with Opera mini / mobile). i wonder how true / effective?
i have also heard of the”Traffic Compressor” – Tcompressor – used to put the squeezeon data traffic – on desktop.
i guess the desktop browser that transparently compresses data – the way the Operamini/mobile does – will eternally win the heart of billions of parsimonious data consumers – like me.
in any desktop browser, how about including an option to allow an optional proxyserver_based access – as implemented by many mobile browsers?

Love Etisalat
With opera mini you will be surprised how far the 100MB can go.
I used to think I browse alot but i was able to use it for a month without any tethering just opera mini on Nokia 5230.
Nokia 5800 should watch out for 5230.

you can still tether your phone to your pc but instead of browsing with normal desktop browsers, you can browse with opera mini on your pc using java emulators and it works fine.
just google it you will find instructions on the internet on how to go about it

Why bother looking for opera mini and performing all those complicated stuff mentioned in the link i gave previously when you can simply continue to use your WinWap browser whenever you are on limited data plan.
I am using it now with only about 600kb left on my etisalat 100Mb/1000k and its working wonders.
I’ll stick to WinWap if i were you.

I think i see why you need the opera mini in spite of your winwap.
1. Multitab browsing
2. Download manager
3. Better data compression without sacrifice of good webpage display.

I’ve opened the link and downloaded the emulator zip folder. but i do not not know what to do with the content of the folder as the instructions are not clear enough. How can i execute a java file on pc ?
It keeps asking if i want to install on phone.
Maybe yomi should come to the rescue.
Winwap is good but i dont think it compresses data.

The 100MB/N1000 plan is a bundle plan that should have cost users about N15000 on the pay-as-you-go usually priced @ 15k/kb. Kinda makes sense & its ideal on mobile devices.

1. first extract/unzip the contents of the folder to a folder on your hard disk
2. open the folder and double click on microemulator.jar. it will launch it if you have have runtime on you pc. most pc should have this.
3. from the microemulator program that just lunched, click on options, then click select device. it brings out a dialog box. choose add… then browse to the folder you extracted/unzipped the files previouisly on your hard disk, open devices folder and select the file: microemu-device-resizable.jar
4. set the device as default
5. now go to: http://www.opera.com/mobile/download/versions/ choose opera mini 5.1 , click view download link and download both files onto your pc
6. now go back to the microemulator program and click file then choose open jad file, browse to where you downloaded your operamini and click on the jad file there. you will see opera mini in the program workspace
7. double click operamini or click start. its should run. you can resize microemulator to fill the screen of your pc if you have succesfully done step 3 & 4

I discovered that i cant save images and pages, also i can neither upload or download in the opera mini in micro emulator, is their a way around this problem?
Do you know of any java instant messanger that can work in micro emulator? I’ve tried kjv and oxford dictionary and it works but ebuddy opens and it does not allow for signing in.
