In a surprise twist, Apple has approved Opera Mini for the iPhone. Opera today announced its popular mobile browser, Opera Mini has been approved for iPhone and iPod touch on the App Store. Opera Mini will be available as a free download within 24 hours, depending on market.
So, if you’ve got an iPhone and need to save cost on your mobile internet usage, your prayers just got answered.
The Opera Mini App is available for free from the App Store on iPhone and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore/.

Good move by Apple. This approval shows that Apple may not be as anti-competitive as some people would like us to believe.
Or maybe they are just being smart!
With the recent restriction by Apple on the source language that can be used to create iPhone Apps (use Objective C, and the prohibition of cross-platform compilers, and the attendant widespread criticism and negative reaction to this new policy ( see http://theflashblog.com/?p=1888), this ‘Opera Mini’ approval coming so soon after that should palliate the wave of negative feeling gathered by Apple as a hard-nosed anticompetitive behemoth…
Some software are good enough to buy a hardware just to run them. I think Opera Mini qualifies. More grease to Opera’s ubiquitous elbow!

I agree with EyeBeeKay completely. YEs, I believe this is a good move by Apple. It would be good to have an alternative browser in my phone. I am also delighted that at long last My favourite browser OPERA will be in the iphone and ipod touch.
i am presently downloading it now from the Apple Itunes store. The Opera mini browser for iphone is about 1.1 megabyte large. I should be through in less than no time. After which, I shall have more to write here.

Yes, I am through with downloading it and I have installed it in my phone. I am giving it a hands-on experience now. SO far, the opera mini for iphone meets up with all the beauty that I have come to know in the Opera Browser!

I always believe Apple will accept opera mini into their fold. They know its in their own interest to do so. When sound financial proposition and common sense are involved, arrogance must give way. Unless of course, the company is not out to make profit.

This is a very surprising move by Apple. It have never hidden its disdain for any web browser that isnt built upon Safari’s webkit engine. The Opera guys must have used ‘jazz’ on Mr Jobs & co.
This is all the more surprising because earlier this week, Apple ban all its app developers from using 3rd party tools in developing applications for the iphone,ipad & ipod

@Azeez Saheed. Yes, I was delighted to have the opera mini for iphone. It works fast. Breezy. About 4 times faster than the embedded safari browser. You can place bookmarks in it and sync the bookmarks with your laptop’s opera browser! And vice versa. You can save webpages with the usual tabbed browsing and quick browsing pane. And Mind you, since the release of the opera mini on Monday, it has been downloaded one million times! Can you beat that?! This is the number one most frequently downloaded free app on the itunes store!
You are also correct; Apple banned all app developers from using 3rd party tools in developing applications for the iphone OS. I believe it is for a good reason. They want any App developer to be dedicated and create a quality assured app. And not a custom oriented app software from a 3rd party programme where you just type some words and change some codes, not so anologous to slides in Microsoft power point. You’ll agree with me that if you create a power point from the scratch, it is often unique and better looking than using the custom templates embedded in the PowerPoint application itself. SO also in creating apps for the iphone OS. 3.0 or 4.0. According to apple, “Applications must be originally written in Objective-C, C, C++, or JavaScript as executed by the iPhone OS WebKit engine”
