The Smirnoff Company has flagged off a test run of its new mobile website with a promo offering FREE airtime to mobile phone users. This promo is available only via the company’s mobile site, and will run for three (3) months.

Weeks ago, MobilityNigeria.com reported that with Celtel Nigeria’s rebranding to Zain, the mobile operator stated that WAP over GPRS service was restricted to post-paid subscribers only. That statement is still on the Zain Nigeria website.

But the reality on ground is that for whatever reason, prepaid lines are still being activated for WAP over GPRS and are indeed still browsing. However, the tariff is not clear, as we got a mixed bag of results. Of course, former Celtel’s GPRS billing platform was legendary for arbitary failures and billings.

Our monitoring also confirms that 3G is now available on the Zain network in a few scattered locations across Lagos and Abuja.

We hope that Zain does something about the erratic GPRS billing system and then officially throws its data services (GPRS, EDGE and 3G) open to all subscribers in the manner that MTN and GloMobile have.

Mobilefest Africa, a mobile phone festival announced here some weeks back, will now hold in November, not October as earlier scheduled.

GSM mobile operator, GloMobile, has announced a rate slash as part of its 5th year anniversary bonanza. The tariff cuts affect MMS (Multi-media messaging) and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service).

According to GloMobile, “GPRS rates have been reduced by up to 70%, MMS is now N30/msg and internet browsing is just 15k/KB“.
